If ever there was an uncrowned king who commanded more respect and reverence than any ruler, hereditary or democratic, it was Sri Uthradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma of Travancore, a princely state in British India, now part of the state of Kerala.

Adulation and admiration for him were evident for many years, but the outpouring of grief in Kerala over his demise at the age of 91 on Dec. 16 was exceptional in terms of the number of mourners and the sense of loss expressed.  Read more
