When the Maharashtra government recently rejected the Adarsh Commission report, former chief  minister Ashok Chavan assumed he had got a reprieve.

However, Chavan's fate continues to hang in balance as the matter can still be pursued by the courts on the basis of the inquiry commission's observations.

The Commission, headed by retired high court judge JA Patil, has noted that Ashok Chavan gave permission to the housing society as a quid pro quo for two flats allotted to his relatives.

The term "quid pro quo"  is being read as a clear indictment under the Anti-Corruption Act as it  establishes that Ashok Chavan had gone out of his way to favour the Adarsh Housing Society in return for favours.

Congress leaders told Rediff.com that the Adarsh scam could continue  to haunt the party as the court can take suo motto notice of the commission report, especially its observations about the former Maharasthra chief minister Chavan. On the other hand,  the matter can be pursued in the courts by anybody.  -- Anita Katyal
