LIVE! Khobragade a step closer full diplomatic immunity, won't have to appear in court

Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade gets accreditation to India's permanent mission to UN. Accreditation to India's permanent mission to the UN will entitle Khobragade to a US State Department Identity card. This means she is exempted from making a personal appearance in court in the visa fraud case and is a step closer to getting full diplomatic immunity.

The UN ID card is likely to be issued after Christmas.

Khobragade's attorney had said that her diplomatic status provides her with immunity irrespective of whether she has been reassigned to the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations.

"Our position has always been that she always has that diplomatic immunity. All of the charges should be dropped because she has diplomatic immunity. If her transfer to the permanent mission makes that fact clearer to the prosecutor's office, then perhaps they would agree more rapidly (to drop charges). The case needs to be dismissed. She has always enjoyed immunity and I can tell you that," he asserted.
