BJP president Rajnath Singh at the BJP Central Parliamentary Board said that Narendra Modi, the party's Prime Minsterial candidate will assume responsibility of major states like Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls in May.

The other states will be left to the Central leadership. For example in Tamil Nadu, Modi will not interfere with Jayalalitha's AIDMK because it believes there are parties that need to be kept for post poll scenarios.

Modi has told Rajnath Singh that he wants to be a stand-by. He does not want to be involved in every state.

The party's internal assessment from southern states is that it should aspire for a maximum of 25 Lok Sabha seats and a minimum of 18 to 20 MPs except for Karnataka where the BJP believes it will get between 10 and 13 seats. In Tamil Nadu it hopes to get between three and five seats and up to eight seats in Andhra Pradesh and a seat or so in Kerala.
