December 12, 2013  12:10
The Madurai Kamaraj University, which has been in a state of tension these last few days (read A Ganesh Nadar's report on what went wrong on the campus), was indefinitely closed today as students started boycotting classes to emphathise with two dismissed and one transferred student.

Following the shutdown all the hostels have been vacated. But students have refused to go home and were even cooking food outside the main gate.

Students Federation of India members from five districts have turned up at MKU to show solidarity with the students, and the Madurai University Faculty Association has pitched in with 15 members.

These 15 along with 300 students were arrested for blocking the university gates yesterday and were later released.

Meanwhile, students from Madras and Alagappa University too wore black bands to express solidarity with their counterparts in Madurai Kamaraj University.
