Live! Sonia's first statement after defeat: Results terribly disappointing
December 08, 2013  17:08
Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi address the press.

Sonia Gandhi, speaking first, congratulated the BJP for their wins in MP and Rajasthan and said she was still hopeful of a win in Chhattisgarh.
She said workers from other states have worked very hard in the election campaign and the results were terribly disappointing.

She says there were many reasons for the defeat and it calls for deep introspection.  "We have to look at the way our own party is equipped or not equipped in running an election. Obviously, people are unhappy. Price rise was an issue. Yet, I thought our chief minister in Rajasthan had run some very good programmes. So there is a question mark there. A great
deal of work was done in Rajasthan. We will take all necessary actions to rectify the situation, but the losses in the state polls are not a reflection on what will happen in the Lok Sabha elections. She said the PM candidate would be announced at an appropriate time.
