August 30, 2013  16:36
In a saner world, Seamus Heaney, the great Irish poet, has died aged 74. While he had been in poor health for some time, he was well enough to give a reading only two days ago at the opening of a conference in Dublin.

Reports of his death surfaced in Dublin media this morning and his family is expected to issue a statement on his death later today.

Dubbed "the most important Irish poet since Yeats', Heaney won numerous honours in a distinguished 45-year career, including the Nobel prize for literature in 1995.  -- The Times, London.
