A march and rally marking the 50th anniversary of the civil-rights March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom stepped off Wednesday morning on Capitol Hill, as marchers began a day of events recalling the historic 1963 demonstration.

Along the 1.6-mile route through downtown Washington to the National Mall, participants walking in a light rain described a nation where minorities and women enjoy far greater legal protections than in 1963, but still experience inequality in employment, education and opportunities.
