There seems to exist a top secret note, written by President Pranab Mukherjee to the government, which asks for details on the state of the economy and the falling rupee. The government received the note today.

The Prime Minister's Office does not want to be seen taking sides in the controversial remarks of the Finance Minister hinting at and hitting out against his immediate predecessor -- Pranab Mukherjee.

Negative media reports on fiscal conditions and pressure from the President to right the situation bring discomfort not only to Dr Manmohan Singh, but also to P Chidambaram.

Senior policy makers are likely to meet the President and explain the real picture.
