West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today said the "economic disaster" the faced country was 'simply intolerable' and wondered whether it could be a result of 'so-called reforms' being pushed by the Centre in view of the 2014 elections.

"The economic disaster through which the country is passing is simply intolerable .... The country is passing through a nightmarish situation with price rise haunting the people like never before," the chief minister said in a Facebook post.

Banerjee, a former UPA ally, said "from petrol to onions, from diesel to dollar, from fertilisers to day to day expenses, prices are skyrocketing."

Stating that the economic security of the common people was at stake, she asked "Is it a product of the so-called reforms and activities being pushed by the Government at the Centre in view of the ensuing Lok Sabha election?"

"The country cannot be run like this," she said and questioned whether it was political gimmickry to satisfy some political parties at the expense of the common people.
