22:07   How Obamas Putin snub is playing out in Russia
On Wednesday evening, when U.S. President Obama cancelled his upcoming visit to Moscow, the Russian reaction was perhaps most clear in the way that Vesti, the state's main propaganda TV channel, conveyed it on the channel's website.

Buried about half way down on the page, underneath a story about Russian tourists inTurkey, Vesti announced: "The invitation for Obama stands.' Beside that was the somewhat diversionary headline: "Barack Obama will travel to St. Petersburg for the G20 summit.'

The actual news '" that Obama had decided not to meet with his Russian counterpart before, after or during the G20 summit in St. Petersburg next month '" was clearly not something the official spin doctors wanted to advertise.

The court-assigned lawyers had asked the judge to let them take over the case, calling his actions "contrary to our professional obligations," but the judge sided with Hasan and ordered them to continue helping him in his murder trial.

The lawyers then demanded to be removed from the case and said they would appeal, but the judge told them to continue their work.

18:50   Parliamentarians should not squander Indo-Pak talks over Poonch tragedy
Nothing could be a sharper contrast than the calmness with which the Pakistani politicians bypassed the temptation to make their country's sensitive ties with India the stuff of grandstanding in the course of the recent general election, and the ease and aplomb with which their Indian counterparts succumb to such a temptation. It does not speak well of a mature democracy.

The BJP had told the house that they were upset with the Rajya Sabha bulletin this morning, which had the names of the BJP MPs who had rushed to the well of the house to protest. But the names of the ruling party MPs were missing.

Consequently, the BJP, ADMK and the Shiv Sena walked out of the Rajya Sabha.

Rattled with this development, Kamal Nath met Hamid Ansari to ensure that any such bulletins should not mention names.

Defence minister AK Antony makes the much-awaited fresh statement in the Lok Sabha.

Antony, who has been on the back foot since yesterday, after his statement that the five Indian jawans were killed by terrorists dressed in Pakistan army uniform, has now changed his statement.

The defence minister said, "My statement was based on information available on the LoC killings. We now know that Specialist troops of the Pakistan government were responsible for the deaths of our soldiers at the Line of Control. Nothing happens on the Pakistan side of the LoC without the direct involvement of the Pakistan army. Those in Pakistan who are responsible for the tragedy and the brutal killings of ours soldiers should not go unpunished," he said.

He said the LoC incident will have consequences and the restraint shown by India should not be taken for granted.

Our behenji, Ms Mayawati has just opened a box of mithai. The Supreme Court has rejected the plea seeking a review of its order quashing a disproportionate assets case against former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati.

A bench of justices P Sathasivam and Dipak Misra, which had clarified that CBI is free to probe the BSP chief during an earlier hearing on the case, passed an order clarifying the earlier judgement.

While reserving its verdict on May 1, the bench had said that the FIR in the case was quashed because the agency proceeded against her without properly understanding its orders which were confined to Taj Corridor case related to the release of Rs. 17 crore by UP government allegedly without sanction.

That judgement had not taken away CBI's power to proceed against her in a separate disproportionate assets case, the court had said.

09:05   Antony to correct blooper on LoC killings today
In the wake of the uproar over Defence Minister AK Antony's statement on the killing of five Indian soldiers along the Line of Control, the government is likely to issue a new statement on Thursday.

Parliament was disrupted for a second day on Wednesday, as the Bharatiya Janata Party accused Antony of misleading both houses.

On Tuesday, Antony said that some 20 heavily-armed terrorists along with men dressed in Pakistan Army uniform ambushed an Indian Army patrol inside Jammu and Kashmir. Five soldiers were killed and one was seriously injured in the attack.

However, an earlier Army statement placed the blame on the Pakistan Army for the ambush.

On Wednesday, top BJP leaders met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and conveyed that the government had created "a big problem" through Antony's statement on the killing of five Indian soldiers.

The BJP has sharply slammed the government over Antony not blaming the Pakistani Army for killing the Indian soldiers and has demanded an apology from him.
