Coal-gate: CBI has to be liberated from political masters
April 30, 2013  11:33
The Supreme Court says it's first exercise is to liberate the the CBI from political interference. "The CBI' independent position must be restored and it cannot be influenced by masters and does not need to take instructions from political masters," says the Supreme Court. This supression by CBI is not ordinary, says the SC.

Attorney General GE Vahanvati is not representing the government today at a crucial Supreme Court hearing on whether Law Minister Ashwani Kumar and other government officials tried to influence the CBI's investigation into the coal scam.

Solicitor General Mohan Parasaran is appearing for the Centre. The hearing, which has begun, is being seen as crucial for Kumar, who has refused to accede to opposition demands that he resign.

The opposition has said that the CBI's admission in court last week is incontrovertible evidence that the government tried to influence the CBI's report. It has demanded the resignation of both the Law Minister and the Prime Minister.
