Shootout at MIT campus near Boston, cop killed

Just In: Police and Federal Bureau of Investigation officials are responding to a shootout alert at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus in Cambridge.

According to reports, a university police officer has been shot dead.

The university, which lies adjacent to the city of Boston, requested people stay away from the building as police consider the situation still active and dangerous.

Students and faculty received e-mails to alert them to the event, CNN affiliate WCVB reported.

Residents in the area have been on edge after two bombs ripped through the crowd near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, killing three people and injuring about 180 others.
