Twenty people were killed and 14 others injured when two carriages packed with workers of a coal mine in northwest China's Gansu province crashed today. This is the latest mishap to hit the country's accident-prone sector.

A steel cable pulling the locomotive, carrying 34 miners in two carriages, snapped in a pit in Baiyin city near Lanzhou in the wee hours of today, the provincial administration of work safety said.

The two carriages slipped and overturned, sending all the workers aboard down into the pit, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported. Rescuers had retrieved the bodies of 20 miners, while most of the 14 survivors were in the hospital.
