Opposition parties have condemned the Rs 5/litre hike in the price of diesel.

CPI-M leader Brinda Karat said that the hike will have a "cascading effect" while the BJP said the UPA government was going back to the time of a "controlled economy".

Trinamool Congress, a major ally in the ruling UPA, also expressed its unhappiness about the hike. "We will discuss the fallout of the hike in our party meeting," said Union minister Mukul Roy.
