A police officer was killed and 20 people injured early today in violent street clashes after marches marking the anniversary of the 1973 military coup against president Salvador Allende.

Officer Cristian Martinez was shot in the chest while trying to stop looters from ransacking a store in the area of Parinacota, north of Santiago, where residents clashed with police, authorities said. Another 20 people, including a child, were injured during the night of violence in which rioters manned flaming barricades, exchange fire with police, looted stores and set fire to city buses and private vehicles, officials said.

Police said 255 people, many of them minors, were arrested before order was restored.
