Hurricane Sandy leaves NYC, dangers remain

While Hurricane Sandy has officially left the New York City area, people are still advised to stay indoors as dangers still remain, said New York mayor Michael Bloomberg in a press conference in New York on Tuesday.

He said the superstorm has created havoc with 23 serious fires and has destroyed as many as 80 houses.

Our first priority is protecting lives. Our 76 shelter homes will be open till people find places to stay, the mayor said.

He said the storm has caused extensive damage across the city that cannot be repaired overnight, but he said the administration will do its best to restore power and get the mass transit system running as soon as possible.

He said that while 911 has been working without a hitch, it should be used only for life threatening situations.
