23:58   Rajat Gupta trial all set to begin
Former Goldman Sachs Director Rajat Gupta entered in court building in New York at around 1:45 pm, where his trial is all set to begin. He allowed photographers to take his pictures, while telling his lawyer that they were just doing their jobs.

The Diwali of 2011 saw Gupta surrender himself before the FBI after charges of insider trading were filed against him by Manhataan's top federal prosecutor India-born Preet Bharara.

A year later, Gupta's fate is set to be sealed on on Wednesday as US District Judge Jed Rakoff sentences him later this evening on the charges that could send him behind bars for up to a decade.

23:58   UK support for US drone attacks in Pakistan may be a war crime...
...a London court is told... The Guardian reports: 'The British government's support for US drone operations over Pakistan may involve acts of assisting murder or even war crimes, the high court heard on Tuesday. In the first serious legal challenge in the English courts to the drones campaign, lawyers for a young Pakistani man whose father was killed by a strike from an unmanned aircraft are seeking to have the sharing of UK locational intelligence declared unlawful. Noor Khan, 27, is said to live in constant fear of a repeat of the attack in North Waziristan in March last year that killed more than 40 other people, who are said to have gathered to discuss a local mining dispute. The British government has declined to state whether or not its signals intelligence agency GCHQ passes information in support of the CIA drone operations over Pakistan, although the court heard that media reports suggest that it does. The case opened as the RAF confirmed that it is to double the number of its own drones flying combat and surveillance operations over Afghanistan. The five additional aircraft will be operated from the UK for the first time, rather than the US. The UK's existing Reaper drones, which are used to target suspected insurgents in Helmand province, have been operated from Creech air force base in Nevada because the RAF has not had the capability to fly them from Britain. Martin Chamberlain, counsel for Khan, said that a newspaper article in 2010 had reported that GCHQ was using telephone intercepts to provide the US authorities with locational intelligence on leading militants in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The report suggested that the Cheltenham-based agency was proud of this work, which was said to be "in strict accordance with the law". On the contrary, Chamberlain said, any GCHQ official who passed locational intelligence to the CIA knowing or believing that it could be used to facilitate a drone strike would be committing a serious criminal offence."The participation of a UK intelligence official in US drone strikes, by passing intelligence, may amount to the offence of encouraging or assisting murder," he said. Alternatively, it could amount to a war crime. Between June 2004 and September this year, according to research by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, drone strikes killed between 2,562 and 3,325 people in Pakistan, of whom between 474 and 881 were civilians, including 176 children. With the number of drone strikes increasing sharply under the Obama administration, the London case is one of several being brought by legal activists around the world in an attempt to challenge their legality..'

Ailing Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray today did not attend his party's annual Dussehra rally but sought support for his son and grandson as he launched a broadside against Congress and the Gandhi family through a recorded message.

In an attack on Congress president Sonia Gandhi, he said the 'gang of five' (Sonia, Rahul, Priyanka, Robert Vadra and her Political Secretary Ahmed Patel) should be "destroyed".

23:04   Modi's fasts a political gimmick: Ahmed Patel
Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's 'sadbhavna' fasts and his recent 'Swami Vivekananda Yatra' were just ploys to derive political mileage, said Ahmed Patel, political secretary to Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

Addressing a meeting of Congress workers after the inauguration of party office at Bharuch today, Patel said, "People should not be mislead by Modi's false propaganda and should bring Congress back to power in Gujarat in the elections in December."

22:31   Libyan militia takes former Gadhafi stronghold
AP reports: Libya's government today took control of one of the last strongholds of deposed dictator Muammar Gaddafi's loyalists, the government claimed, after fierce battles that left dozens dead and thousands displaced.

The capture of Bani Walid was a triumph for the government that replaced Gaddafi's regime, but the fact that it took a full year underlined the fractious nature of the country and the new regime's inability to impose its authority over squabbling tribes and heavily armed militias.

20:54   French PM backs Obama in US presidential race
AP: French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault has broken with diplomatic protocol by openly expressing his hope that Barack Obama wins the upcoming US presidential election.

"If I was an American citizen I wouldn't hesitate to vote for Obama," he told a radio interviewer today.

While it is hardly surprising that Ayrault, a Socialist, would support the Democrat candidate in a US election, prudence normally restricts politicians from making such remarks given the possibility they will end up having to deal with their Republican rivals.

Ayrault is not however the first French minister to offer public support for Obama in his neck-and-neck battle with Republican Mitt Romney.

Drivers run the show but it's the fans who make a Formula One race special and the Indian Grand Prix can become one of the most exciting races on the calendar if the home fans support the event, outgoing McLaren star Lewis Hamilton said today.

Close to one lakh people had thronged the Buddh International Circuit  to watch the inaugural Indian GP last year but it looks it won't be a full house this time around.

"The track and the good crowd make the race exciting. In Singapore and Silverstone, it's full of people. When in Spain and Montreal, the city comes alive. It's the fans who make it special. So if people can turn out, it can become one of the most exciting Grands Prix," Hamilton said ahead of the second edition of the Indian Grand Prix.

A court in the quake-devastated town of L'Aquila convicted seven former members of Italy's so-called 'Great Risks Commission' and sentenced each of them to six years in prison, prompting predictions that experts would be discouraged from working in Italy for fear of similar risks of prosecution.

Commission president Luciano Maiani and two other members resigned, along with a top official for earthquake and volcano risk in the national department of civil protection.
