Just in: Eminent writer Sunil Gangopadhyay passed away in Kolkata on Tuesday. He was 78.

His magnum opus and winner of the 1985 Sahitya Akademi Award Sei samaya was the result of in-depth research work into the cross-currents of socio-intellectual life during the 19th century Bengal renaissance. But it is poetry that had remained his first love, and time and again he raised his voice in distinctive verses to protest against social evils.

His sensitivity, vigorous expression, and master craftsmanship earned him many awards including Bankim Puraskar, 1982; Sahitya Akademi Award, 1985; and Ananda Puraskar (twice).
