At least 52 people were injured in 12 separate highway crash incidents involving 47 vehicles in Florida, authorities said on Saturday.

No fatalities have been reported in the massive pile-up on Interstate 75 near the border of Sarasota and Manatee counties that left the highway closed for six hours.

Florida Highway Patrol attributed the series of collision to heavy rain coupled with fast driving.

The first crash happened in heavy rain and a chain reaction of collisions followed, Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Kenneth Watson said.

"When one person got into that crash that vehicle began to rotate. You had what you would call a domino effect," he told The Tampa Tribune.
