Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday formally kick-started her party's poll campaign in Gujarat by lambasting the Opposition in a public meeting in Rajkot.

Addressing the crowd, Sonia said: "Congress party has always accepted the Mahatma's ideals & followed them. We have miles to go ahead, but have come miles since 1947. Many people make many claims but no one has done as much for Gujarat as the Congress party has."

"It is the habit of some people to take credit for the work done by other people, let them do it. You are deliberately not being told that the UPA government released 50% more funds than the NDA government from Gujarat," she said.

"It is unfortunate that the waters of the Narmada from the Sardar Sarovar dam has not reached Saurashtra. We demand that the state government look into the farmers problems, especially cases of suicide and send a report to the Centre so that they can be compensated."

"I am saddened that in the last five years none of the benefits of schemes have reached regions like Saurashtra. The state government should send recommendations to the Centre quickly so that farmers here can get relief packages"

The Congress president also talked about FDI in retail.

"FDI will allow farmers to get the right price for their produce. Why are CMs attempting to deceive people on it I wonder. I wish to ask is it not the right of farmers to get the right price for their produce?"
