Italian protester scales St Peter's dome in Vatican

An Italian businessman perched perilously at the top of the 130 metre-high dome of St Peter's Basilica today, after scaling it to protest austerity measures imposed on the recession-hit country.

Marcello De Finizio, a businessman from Trieste in northern Italy, managed to slip past security guards at the Vatican last evening and hang up a banner saying: "Help! Enough Monti, Enough Europe... do you call this growth?"

Italy's Prime Minister Mario Monti has imposed a series of sweeping austerity measures to tackle the country's vast debt, but critics have accused him of failing to boost growth and of stifling the population with high taxes.
