SC to Maha govt: Explain arrests of Facebook girls

The Supreme Court has slapped notices on the Maharashtra government, the Centre and four other states over the Facebook arrests. The Supreme Court has also issued notices to Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Delhi and Puducherry on the basis of a PIL.

The SC has issued the notices on the basis of a PIL filed by 21-year-old Shreya Singhal, an astrophysics graduate from University of Bristol in the UK.

The Supreme Court yesterday said it disapproved of the arrests of the two youngsters in Palghar for questioning in their Facebook posts, the Mumbai shutdown of November 18 for Sena chief Bal Thackeray's funeral. It then heard the PIL seeking scrapping of section 66A of the IT act used for the arrests of Shaheen Dhadha, 21, and her friend, Renu Srinivasan,.
