Saina Nehwal, Mary Kom are EC national icons

The Election Commission of India makes sportswomen Saina Nehwal and MC Mary Kom as its "national icons". The Olympic bronze medallists are first women to be selected as the National Icon of the ECI. Up till now, the ECI has appointed two national icons -- former President of India APJ Abdul Kalam Azad and Cricketer MS Dhoni.
As national icons, Kom and Nehwal will have two responsibilities -- to create awareness among the youth including women of the country to register themselves in the photo electoral rolls and second, would be to spread the message to the general public for exercising their franchise.
