Taking exception to British rock star Elton John's move of dedicating his recent performance here to dissident Ai Weiwei, an official daily today said Chinese audience should "boo" western performers whenever they evoke issues sensitive to China.

Elton John and his band held a concert in Beijing on Sunday, during which time he suddenly announced that the show was dedicated to Ai Weiwei, the Global Times said in its editorial today. Besides being a noted dissident campaigning for human rights in China, Ai Weiwei is an artist, sculpture, architect involved in designing the Birds Nest stadium in Beijing for 2008 Olympics. He faced several cases instituted by security officials against him.
