Fall in dropout rate in Naxal-hit areas: Tharoor

The government today said dropout rate in states affected by Naxal violence has been showing a decreasing trend in many areas since the inception of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA).

"However, in a few areas, the progress is not satisfactory," Minister of State for HRD Shashi Tharoor said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.

In reply to another question, he said enrollment of girls had shown a considerable increase. As per School Education Statistics (SES) in 2005-06 the enrolment of girls was 6.16 crore in primary schools, 2.33 crore in upper primary schools and 1.61 crore in secondary and senior secondary schools. The figure increased to 6.48 crore, 2.92 crore and 2.29 crore respectively in 2010-11, he said.
