Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday appealed to opposition parties to ensure that the Parliament's winter session, which starts today, functions smoothly.

Dr Singh stated that the ruling UPA is ready to discuss all issues with the opposition, adding that a lot of legislative work was pending.

"I seek the cooperation of all parties. The government and the opposition must work together," he said.

The winter session is expected to be a rough one for the UPA, which may face a no-confidence motion from former ally Trinamool Congress and voting on the issue of FDI in retail.
