November 22, 2012  15:34
Pakistani authorities put in place an extensive security blanket for a summit of Islamic leaders here today, a day after a Taliban suicide bombing and other incidents of violence left over 30 people dead, majority of them Shias, and scores injured across the country.

Thousands of additional police and paramilitary forces were deployed to protect the leaders attending the Developing Eight (D-8) Summit as the government declared a public holiday in Islamabad today as part of security. Leaders from Iran, Egypt, Malaysia, Nigeria, Turkey, Bangladesh and Indonesia are attending the meet, which Pakistan is using as an event to position itself as a key player in the Islamic world.
