November 05, 2012  10:16
At least 22 people died and around 40,000 were rendered homeless as incessant heavy rain lashed the coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh under the influence of the passing cyclonic storm Nilam.

The weather department has predicted heavy showers in the next 48 hours.

Continuing rains along the coastline have inundated around 130 villages in Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam, Krishna, Guntur and the east and west Godavari districts. Crops spread over 2.5 lakh hectares of farmland are under water. Schools remain shut.

More deaths are feared as several areas remain submerged.
