Kanimozhi meets PM over Lankan Tamils

DMK MP Kanimozhi, the daughter of party chief M Karunanidhi, met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at his residence on Wednesday evening and handed over a memorandum that spoke at length about the problems being faced by Tamils in Sri Lanka.

The DMK leader also brought to Singh's attention Sri Lanka reporting to the UN on the progress it has made on issues relating to human rights and said India should take steps to ensure that Tamils are given equal rights and charts their future according to their wishes.

"I urge the government of India to ensure that Sri Lanka upholds its promises made to the international community on holding those guilty of human rights excesses accountable," she said in the memorandum.

Sri Lanka was censured by the UNHRC in March when a US-sponsored resolution that alleged large-scale violations of human rights during the last phase of the war. India had supported the resolution
