UN's Ban says Syria rivals must reject 'terrorist acts'

UN leader Ban Ki-moon said today the Syrian government and opposition must "distance themselves" from terrorist attacks such as the double bomb blast in Damascus which left dozens dead.

Ban reaffirmed a call for all sides in the conflict to cease all violence and "to distance themselves from indiscriminate bombings and other terrorist acts," UN spokesman Martin Nesirky said. The UN secretary general "strongly condemns" the attacks in Damascus, which Syrian authorities said left at least 55 dead, said the spokesman.

President Bashar al-Assad's government has blamed opposition rebels seeking to overthrow him, while the opposition has accused the government of staging the huge car bomb blasts. Ban said all sides in the Syria conflict must keep to UN Security Council resolution 2043 which set up a ceasefire monitoring force and demanded a halt to violence as part of a peace plan that Assad agreed with UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan.
