How a Chinese legal activist became an icon of freedom

After six days of negotiations between the United States and China, blind legal activist Chen Guangcheng left the US Embassy in Beijing on Wednesday afternoon. Details remain sparse, but the deal is already proving controversial. Chen apparently told reporters that he believed his wife would be beaten to death if he stayed in the embassy.
