Dog poo may be used to light street lamps

In other news, a PTI report says that a Briton has come up with an ingenious idea to collect four tonnes of dog poo in a day from one county and turn it into electricity. Gary Downie, 41, a former banker, came up with the pioneering scheme and has now struck a deal with the council to install 'dog stations' around Flintshire, in north Wales.

The waste collected will then be broken down by microorganisms and turned into power, in a process called anaerobic digestion, the Daily Mail reported. Dog waste and biodegradable bag is thrown in an airtight 'methane digester'.

The mixture is stirred using hand crank to help methane rise to the top of tank.  When the tank fills up to the level of the outlet pipe and then overflows into the overflow tank, keeping the digester tank at a constant level, a small pipe coming off the digesterbrings the methane to a lamppost where it is burned.
