Imagine Pranab Mukherjee standing up in the Lok Sabha last Friday and announcing he was shunting the mainline national rural employment guarantee scheme into the junkyard. Amidst the thunder of jubilantly thumped Opposition desks, Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi would have lost no time in shunting him right out of the marshalling yard of active politics.

From the Trinamul Congress's point of view, Dinesh Trivedi committed a comparable act of heresy. Higher railway fares may be necessary but the rise derailed the propaganda of a party with a one-track mind, and that mind its chief's.
