'Pakistan's news media no longer open'
June 23, 2012  18:29
The openness of the news media in Pakistan has given way since the last three-four years to the domination of opinion reinforcing extremism, according to an Islamabad-based nuclear physicist.

Pervez Hoodbhoy, senior academic and commentator on current issues, told a seminar at the King's College that there was much plurality of opinions in Pakistan's news media, until the siege of Lal Masjid happened in 2007.

"Television anchors are openly biased, towards the right. There was plurality and an open culture until three-four years, but that changed after the Lal Masjid events. Now there is a preponderance on television of fundamentalist extremism." he said.
