19:03   Copies of Adarsh documents safe with CBI
Amid apprehensions that several important files relating to the Adarsh Housing Society scam may have been destroyed in today's fire at 'Mantralaya', officials of CBI and the judicial panel probing it said they have copies of all relevant documents.

As a massive fire engulfed several floors of the 7-storey state government secretariat building, housing among others the Urban Development department, in the eye of the Adarsh controversy, there were strong suspicions that crucial files might have been lost forever.

However, both CBI, which was handed over the probe by the Ministry of Defence and the two-member inquiry commission set up by the state government to look into allegations of irregularities, said they had copies of all relevant documents relating to the 31-storey plush building in south Mumbai.

19:02   'Armymen paraded before CMs to influence them'
Armymen were "paraded" before the then Maharashtra Chief Ministers Vilasrao Deshmukh and Sushilkumar Shinde by promoters of Adarsh Housing Society to convince them that the building was meant for defence personnel, a senior army officer has told the judicial commission probing the Adarsh scam.

"Persons like me were asked to parade in uniform before Shinde and (later) Deshmukh by Adarsh promoters Kanhaiyalal Gidwani, Brigadier M Wanchoo and R C Thakur, to give them an impression that the Society was being formed for the welfare of defence personnel," John Mathew, Commanding Officer of National Cadet Corps (NCC), said before the panel yesterday.

Mathew's statement assumes significance in view of the allegation that concessions were obtained from the state and civic authorities on the ground that the building was meant for defence personnel.

He said the case is already under the watch of Bombay high court. The delay in filing charge sheet is not due to unavailability of any file.

18:11   I know how to handle pressure, says Vishnu

Poor Vishnu Vardhan. A classic case of counting his chickens before they are hatched.

Vardhan today said he is under no pressure and that the experience of playing
alongside Sania Mirza in the 2010 Asiad will hold him in good stead when he partners Leander Paes in the upcoming Olympics. "When I was asked to pair up with Sania during the Asian Games at Guangzhou in 2010, I was totally under pressure but I handled it well at that time. Now I know how to handle
pressure," Vishnu said.

Vishnu said that he had no knowledge of what exactly Paes had communicated to All India Tennis Association and hence would not like to read too much into it. "I don't know what exactly had happened or what was the e-mail all about. Probably I will get to know when I meet Leander," insisted the 19-year-old.
Vishnu said that he would not be overawed by Paes on the court as he shares a good relation with him.

18:04   Leander's dad: AITA has rewarded those who blackmail India

Dr Vece Paes says Leander is fed up with the AITA not taking a strict stand. The AITA has chosen to reward those blackmailing the country and the selection process is based on politics not AITA rankings.

Dr Paes says Leander does not take flippant decisions and he said he would not go. And there's no guarantee Sania will partner Leander either, says Dr Paes.

image
17:57   Leander Paes says NO to Olympics
Breaking news: Leander Paes bows out of the London Olympics. His father, Dr Vece Paes, speaking to CNN IBN says Leander is very clear about his decision and is turning down the AITA's two-team formula for the Olympics. Paes had yesterday said he was not willing to be paired with the 'low-ranked' Vishnu Vardhan. Which means India will only have Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna for the Olympics, with Bhupathi partnering Sania Mirza for the mixed doubles.

14:04   Olympics without Leander is unthinkable: AITA

More on the AITA press conference.

AITA president Anil Khanna also said, "I would like to mention that tennis unfortunately is not a sport which is governed like other sports. Top tennis players are employed with ATP and don't have much to do with ITF or the national association," said Khanna.

"The kind of reactions they (Bhupathi and Bopanna) have given, the ATP will not even consider it indiscipline. Till last evening we were trying to talk to them but both Mahesh and Bopanna said they won't partner Leander. "But the AITA believes that Olympics without Leander is unthinkable," he added.

Update on the arrest warrant against the new Pakistan PM.

A Pakistani court today issued a non-bailable arrest warrant for Pakistan Peoples Party prime ministerial candidate Makhdoom Shahabuddin in connection with alleged irregularities in the import of a large amount of the
controlled drug Ephedrine during his tenure as Health Minister.

Acting on a request from the Anti-Narcotics Force, Judge Shafqatullah Khan of a special ANF court in Rawalpindi issued arrest warrants for Shahabuddin and former premier Yousuf Raza Gilani's Ali Musa Gilani. The judge directed officials to arrest and present them in his court within a week.

13:54   No disciplinary action against Hesh, Rohan: AITA

Khanna added, "Sania has already stated after the French Open that although she prefers to play with Mahesh, she would play with any partner in the Olympics."

"Leander and Sania are the only direct entry for the mixed doubles. If Sania gets a wild card, they will be only Indian pair at number 19 with their combined rankings," he added.

Asked why Somdev was not considered for teaming up with Paes even though he had declared himself fit, Khanna said, "We don't want to jeopardise Paes' chances by pairing him with someone who may not be fit effectively."

Today is the last day for sending entries for the London Games to International Tennis Federation (ITF). Khanna, however, ruled out any immediate disciplinary action against Bhupathi and Bopanna, who had minced no words
in expressing their displeasure with the original selection. "To take a harsh decision against Mahesh and Rohan is not in the best interest of nation. AITA established a code of conduct, we will consider action only after the Olympics," he said.

13:50   Decision unfair on Paes, admits AITA

Giving its two-team decision, the AITA today said it was a compromise formula to resolve the selection crisis for the Olympics. It said the decision was "unfair" on world number 7 Paes.

"Undoubtedly the most patriotic one, who has the record of most David Cup appearances for India and has served the nation for over 20 years, had been driven to the wall and had to react sharply," AITA President Anil Khanna
said referring to Paes' threat of a pullout in case of being paired with a junior partner. "AITA does not want Leander's image to be tarnished. AITA
asks Leander to forgive the utterances (against him by Bhupathi and Bopanna).

"Leander Paes and Vishnu Vardhan (ranked 207) and Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna will be the two teams. We request Leander to reverse to his thoughts and he should help Bopanna and Vishnu to succeed in their first Olympics," he added

Paes' father has said that Leander is unlikely to go with this decision.

Lessons never learnt as yet another child falls into a borewell.

A four-year-old girl fell into a 70-feet deep borewell in Kho village near Manesar while playing with her friends last night. The Army has been called to assist in the rescue operation, officials said here today.

Parallel to the borewell, a large pit is being dug to rescue the child. Chief medical officer Praveen Garg said oxygen is being pumped in the borewell to help the child

A camera was also lowered into the borewell to find out the condition of the child but it did not provide any significant detail. Neeraj claimed that as soon as his daughter fell in the borewell at 11 pm yesterday, he called up the police but they arrived one-and-a-half hour late. For two hours the child kept crying inside the borewell, asking for help but now she is not responding to any calls, he said.
