A man wearing a body armour and a gas mask began shooting during the screening of the Batman movie, the Dark Knight Rises, at a mall in the Denver suburb of Aurora in the US. One person has been taken into custody as police sweep the the theatre and determine whether a second person was involved. The suspect is in his earlier 20s. The gunman was carrying three kinds of guns, and a gas device. It is yet to be ascertained whether it was a tear gas.

The first call came in to the police at 12:39 am. Eyewitnesses say the response from the police was immediate.

The toll has gone up to 14 dead and at least 50 injured -- 10 people died in the theatre while the others died in hospital.
