Our Delhi sources tell us that the BJP has challenged the nomination of former finance minister Pranab Mukherjee for office of the President of India as he is the chairman of the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, and therefore can be debarred under the office of profit clause.

The scrutiny over Pranab Mukherjee's nomination, allegedly for holding an office of profit, was also raised by P A Sangma's aides, the other contender for the post of President. The scrutiny of the nomination papers which was supposed to have been held today, will now be held at 3 pm, tomorrow.

Under the Constitution, a person shall not be eligible for election as President if he holds any office of profit under the Government of India or the Government of any State or under any Local or other Authority subject to the control of any of the State Governments.
