July 02, 2012  17:59

As the death toll in the Assam floods continue to rise, the army, overseeing rescue and relief operations, has stepped up its efforts here. Interacting with mediapersons here on Monday, Red horns division GOC Major General RN Nair said that the army had begun the relief efforts as soon as they received a warning from the civil administration.

He added that there were several people who were unwilling to leave their villages, but those who were sick and not in their best of health were the most vulnerable.

"We have sent our mobile columns to several districts. We started evacuating stranded people. There were some people who were not willing to leave the villages, there were some who refused to be evacuated, but those who wanted to leave, those who were sick were those who were most vulnerable,' Major General Nair said.
