Trounced Maldives prez tells new prez to step down

Newsalert: Former Maldives prez Mohammad Nasheed has asked the new Maldivian president to step down.

This, even as the new president of the Maldives stressed that he did not take power in the Indian Ocean resort islands in a coup and that his succession was in line with the constitution.

The Maldives, one of the world's most famous luxury tourist destinations, installed Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik as president on Tuesday after the man credited with bringing democracy to the islands resigned, apparently under military pressure following a police mutiny, says reuters.
