Heavy Industries Minister and former civil aviation minister Praful Patel has been accused of receiving a bribe from one Nazir Karigar, for a $100-million Air India contract, according to a report in a Canadian daily.

Karigar, an Ottawa-based Indo-Canadian, allegedly also bribed Air India officials, including former Mumbai police chief Hasan Gafoor, who was at that time the chief of Air India security. Karigar allegedly paid the bribe in 2005 to secure a $100-million contract for a facial-recognition system for his employer CryptoMetric.

Patel has denied the allegations and shot off a letter to the prime minister, urging him to get the documents related to the alleged contract examined.
