Declare Dec 29 as National Day on violence against women

Asian Centre for Human Rights in an appeal to the Prime Minister of India Dr Manmohan Singh today called for declaration of December 29 as the "National Day of Violence Against Women' and announcement of a national award in the name of the Delhi bus gang-rape victim who died in Singapore today.

"No other incident has either evoked or shaken the conscience of the nation as this particular incident has. While a number of actions will be recommended by the Justice J S Verma Committee and Justice Usha Mehra Committee, the Declaration of the 29th December as the 'National Day on Violence Against Women' and a national award in the name of the victim will remind the Indian nation about the urgent need to address violence against women.' '" stated Suhas Chakma, director, Asian Centre for Human Rights.
