Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday appealed for calm and promised to take serious steps to curb crimes against women in a public address, in the wake of the violent protests in Delhi against the gangrape of a 23-year-old woman.

Stating that his family too had joined in the concern for the victim, he said, "The anger against the crime is justified, but not the violence".

"I appeal to all sections to maintain calm," said Dr Singh.

He added, "We will ensure safety and security of women. We will keep you informed of the various steps and measures taken for this".
