'Shinde should meet protestors and not PM'

Condemning police action against students protesting the gangrape of a young girl, former Delhi High Court Chief Justice Rajinder Sachar today said this showed insensitivity of the government.

He demanded that either Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde or Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit should meet protesters.

Sachar said public knows that there is no "instant solution" to the problem but Shinde or Dikshit should meet the protesters and assure them that they will do whatever is needed and they are conscious of their demands.

"Look at the way our children are treated. Is this the way? Protesting children are handled in a brutal way. In democracy, this is not the way a protest is handled.

"Shinde is meeting Prime Minister to discuss this. He should meet the protesters now and not the Prime Minister," Sachar said.

Sachar's response came as police resorted to use of force and water canons besides lobbing teargas shells to disperse a crowd of over 10,000 students at Raisina Hills, the seat of power, protesting against rape incident and demanding stringent punishment for the attackers.
