Lok Sabha vote on Quota in Promotions Bill today
December 19, 2012  09:35
The Constitution Amendment Bill providing for quota in promotions in government jobs is likely to be introduced in the Lok Sabha today.

The government managed to pass the quota in promotions bill in the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

Despite strong opposition from the Samajwadi Party, the bill finally got the backing of 206 members while 10 voted against the legislation in Rajya Sabha which has a strength of 245.

The quota in promotions bill has put the Congress-led UPA government in a tight spot with its outside supporters -- SP and BSP -- taking diametrically opposite positions on the bill. While BSP chief Mayawati had made a strong case for it, the Samajwadi Party was isolated in its opposition.

The Samajwadi Party is opposed to the bill mainly because it would upset the party's core vote bank that comprises backward castes and Muslims. The Samajwadi Party has nine Rajya Sabha MPs, all of whom voted against the bill.
