Govt agrees to probe on Walmart lobbying

Both houses of Parliament have resumed after a brief adjournment. The government has agreed to a probe into allegations that Walmart spent Rs 125 crore to gain entry into India. The decision was taken after the PM met Sonia Gandhi over the Walmart logjam in Parliament.

The BJP today raised the matter in both Houses of Parliament and sought the suspension of Question Hour.Yashwant Sinha raised the issue in the Lok Sabha, while M Venkaiah Naidu raised it in Rajya Sabha today. The BJP wants an independent probe into the whole affair to ascertain the facts as to who were the beneficiaries of the amount spent by Walmart on lobbying for entry into India.
Yashwant Sinha says Walmart has bribed Indian lawmakers and policy makers to get into India and it will not allow the company to operate till a probe is conducted.

Walmart spent nearly Rs 125 crore for lobbying with legislators to get access to the Indian market. The US has said the global retail giant did not violate any American law as far as the matter is concerned.
