Rs 500 fine if you carry plastic bag in Mahabaleshwar

If you're headed to the hillstation of Mahabaleshwar, off Mumbai, read this.

The Mahabaleshwar Hill Station Municipal Council has banned plastic bags in the 19 sq km area of this popular hill station in Maharashtra and is launching a
campaign against plastic bags from tomorrow. "We have decided to impose a blanket ban on plastic bags, irrespective of their thickness in microns," chief
officer of the Municipal Council, said. The civic administration decided to impose the ban to ensure protection of the environment of the hill station,
which has a population of 14,000 and receives lakhs of tourists annually.
A fine of up to Rs 500 will be imposed if anybody is found carrying plastic bags.

Matheran, another hill station and an only-pedestrian one at that, near Mumbai has had a plastic ban for years and it works.
