Kabul gunbattle ends: 17 Taliban dead, 30 people injured

In international news: Fighting in the Afghan capital has finally ended, 18 hours after the Taliban launched their assault, officials have said. A spokesman for Kabul's police chief said the last gunman, who was fighting near the parliament in the west of the city, was killed early today.

Earlier, security forces flushed out insurgents in the central diplomatic area, home to several embassies. Officials said at least 17 gunmen and one police officer have died. More than 30 people were injured, many of them civilians.
