September 14, 2011  16:30

Sports minister Ajay Maken has announced a cash reward of Rs 1.5 lakh each for hockey players. Maken said the award was part of an existing scheme which rewards players.

In addition, the Maharashtra government has announced a cash award of Rs 10 lakh for Yuvraj Valmiki which may be followed up by a job offer. Then, the Punjab government announced an award of Rs 25 lakh for the players.

This came after The Indian hockey team rejected Hockey India's cash reward for winning the inaugural Asian Champions Trophy, saying the paltry amount of Rs 25000 each was not proper recognition of their achievement.

During a felicitation ceremony at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium on Tuesday evening, the players were offered the reward, but they rejected it outright.
