From the Times, London: Iran could scrap the post of a directly elected president, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said yesterday, in a renewed sign of simmering mistrust between the Supreme Leader and President Ahmadinejad.

In a speech broadcast on state television, he suggested that, in future, the president could be elected by MPs, rather than through a national poll. It remained, he said, a "distant" prospect" but his words are certain to embolden hardliners determined to force Ahmadinejad from office.

Iran's two most powerful men have been locked in a power struggle since April, when Ahmadinejad dismissed his intelligence minister, only to see him reinstated by the Supreme Leader.
